"Refurbished Buses Drive MSU to Huge Savings"
Author: Garrison, Gene
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: July/August 1997

Discusses how Michigan State University replaced the buses in its financially self-supporting bus system, avoided nearly $11 million in expenses expected to occur over the next 25 years if new buses were purchased, and accomplished it all with no service price increases.  Provides background on the bus service, options considered in replacing buses, and decision to buy older used buses in the early-to-mid 1980 vintage and refurbish them.  Provides cost analysis of 25-year bus life cycle, comparing new and refurbished buses.
