Perspective column. Rather than spending the savings from lower fuel costs on increasing faculty salaries, advises putting the money in reserve for future price increases or spending it on deferred maintenance. At MIT, this would amount to between $6 million to $7 million. Work with staff to prepare moderate- and long-term plans.
