"2007 Effective & Innovative Practices Award Winners / University of California, Davis: Take Lemons and Make Lemonade"
Author: Flynn, Dan
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: September/October 2007

Report of UC Davis's Effective & Innovative Practices award-winning activities.  Describes how the university took a landscape nuisance--old olive trees--and transformed it into a successful olive oil program.  Concerned with the safety hazards of the oily fruit droppings from the university's 1,500 trees, Sal Genito, the director of Buildings and Grounds, conducted a feasability study that resulted in a program that reduces maintenance and liability costs, provides greater collaboration between staff members, improves olive tree health, serves as a "goodwill ambassador" for the campus, and promotes sustainability.  Includes photo of staff members receiving their award check at the APPA 2007 meeting in Baltimore, Maryland in July.
