"Dispatching Paperless Work Orders in an Instant: One Campus Facility Manager's Experience with Wireless Technology"

Describes the emergency phones that connect all elevators at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis with a campus operator who can send an electrician immediately to rescue anyone who becomes trapped.  By providing electricians with Push-To-Talk walkie-talkie wireless communication devices, the campus has improved elevator emergency response time and made communication with maintenance workers quicker and more reliable. Details the decision to switch away from pagers and analog radio system; reviews implementation of the MobileFM Instant, which has converted maintenance forms from paper to electronic format; describes Motorola devices that are used to manage work orders and time cards in the field; and cites how these paperless devices have improved efficiency on campus. Includes photos of staff members Ken Flodder and Jeff Smith using the new devices.
