"The Hidden Costs of Campus Recycling"

Facility Asset Management column. Comments that activities such as recycling can have hidden costs not anticipated by the originators of the project. For example, if custodians are spending time removing materials in accordance with local, state, and EPA and federal guidelines, there may be less time for them to perform necessary custodial tasks. Contracting out the recycling program is one way to identify the true costs of the collection effort. Provides an overview of recycling management and costs at the University of Missouri-Columbia, which recycles about 1,900 tons of trash each year.
