Author: Hignite, Karla
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: November/December 2006

Article prepared as a follow-up to the 2006 APPA/NACUBO/SCUP conference, The Campus of the Future: A Meeting of the Minds, held in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Describes the act of futuring as encompassing a variety of ways to apply foresight and creativity to a situation that is likely to take place in the short, intermediate, or long-term future. Discusses futuring in the context of institutional strategic planning, questions to ask as you move from scenario to strategy, involving more people in the futuring process, and taking a proactive posture in the face of future possibilities. Includes sidebars on a scenario-building excercise conducted at the conference wherein participants chose top driving forces at their institutions and developed scenarios most likely to occur as these forces intersected and listing futures-focused resources for similar campus exercises focusing on "what-if" thinking.
