Executive Summary of the authors' research sponsored by APPA's Center for Facilities Research. Focused on understanding the phases of the decision process students go through as they choose a higher education institution; the timing of the phases in the decision process; and the personal, financial, and environmental factors that influenced institutional choice. Research explored the level of importance of facilities relative to other institutional characteristics. Provides statistical analyses on the differences of observation and opinion between various demographic respondents, including comparisons between gender and race. Also included is a detailed analysis for each institutional characteristic that was important to students at different institutional types and identifiable trends related to recruitment and retention.
