This article was published jointly by APPA, NACUBO, and SCUP in preparation of their joint 2006 conference in Hawaii, at which Dator was scheduled to facilitate a discussion by a futures panel. Stresses that a collective consideration of possible and preferred futures can help administrators and faculty ask and answer important questions. Such serious consideration of radically different alternatives is the key to future studies. Describes four different ways to categorize images of the future: continuation, disciplined society, transformational society, and collapse. Discusses the University of Hawaii's efforts to prepare for their preferred future. Includes a sidebar on teaching alternatives and preferred futures.
