Defines historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) as accredited institutions of higher learning established prior to 1964 with the principal mission of educating African Americans; 103 schools in 20 states, District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands share this distinction. Describes the history, interests, challenges, and current status of HBCUs, beginning in 1830 with the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia, which was renamed Cheyney University. Includes list of HBCUs by APPA regions and a HBCUs trivia quiz.
