Executive Summary column. Facilities are the one constant on campuses while staff, faculty, and students change over time. The total current replacement value for campus facilities exceeds that of the total endowment by almost threefold, a concept little understood by most senior institutional officers. While facilities are increasingly being seen as an asset, the additional challenge is to go beyond tangible benefits represented in dollars and cents to consider their intangible appeal. Summarizes the results of surveys, focus groups, and one-on-one conversations that have helped APPA identifiy the top ten critical facilities issues: resource scarcity; sustainability; information technology; space planning, management, and utilization; deferred maintenance/modernization; energy and environmental management; performance measurement/accountability; safety and security; customer service; and workforce issues.
