Describes the new new standard for lighting exit stairways approved by the American Standards Institute, the Uniform Fire Code, and the Life Safety Code, which requires that "during conditions of stair use, the minimum illumination for new stairs shall be at least 108 lux, measured at the walking surfaces." Because of the energy costs of the new requirement, code writers allow motion sensor controlled stairwell lighting. Discusses features and energy costs of sensor controlled lighting and includes list of manufacturers and websites of interest.
