APPA News column. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education (November 14, 2003), a study released by EDUCAUSE, an education-technology consortium, states that computer network systems in institutions are still vulnerable to viruses and attacks by hackers. Quotes report's observations that hazards usually come from unitended mistakes and carelessness by users. While some faculty members complain that fire walls can compromise academic freedom, the report states that tighter security will preserve academic freedon by ensuring the reliability of date that is being shared.
