"Discount Maintenance Is No Bargain"
Author: Peterson, H. Val
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: July 1996

Focus on Management column.  Quotes 19th century artist/social critic John Ruskin on the hazards of considering only price when making choices.  Comments that some "cheaper" maintenance service companies provide only breakdown maintenance and do not perform routine preventive maintenance, thus costing the institution in the long run.  Emphasizes that while there are well-managed outsourcing services that can benefit the facilities manager, as a general rule "privatization" of building maintenance services will never receive the same degree of attention and dedication as that provided by in-house career-oriented staff.
