This 1995 study of facilities conditions asked respondents to indicate by decade when the facilities on their campuses were constructed, listing gross square footage. Summarizes and discusses the findings of these comparisons. The survey responses suggest that a substantial percentage of the space on campuses is aged, and this aged physical plant helps explain why there is so much accumulated deferred maintenance on college campuses.
