The movement over the past few years from regionally developed model building codes to two international sets of codes may have a signficant impact on higher education facilities in terms of planning, design, construction, and renovation of facilities.  Discusses and differentiates the International Code Council's International Building Code and the National Fire Protection Association's 5000 Building Code.  Describes the Performance-based Design option provided under both codes, which represents a choice between adhering to the prescriptive requirements of traditional building codes and developing performance-based engineering solutions that comply with the intent of the building code and meet the goals and objectives of the users, owners, and other stakeholders of the building. Explains how facilities manager benefit from an understanding the codes.
