"Chapter 6: Focus on Investment"
Author: Rose, Rodney, with David A. Cain, Ph.D.; James J. Dempsey, P.E.; and Rich Schneider
Published In: Buildings. . . The Gifts That Keep on Taking. A Framework for Integrated Decision Making
Date: 2007

The lesson learned from research for this book is that to change the basis of decision making about any facilities investment, it is necessary to shift the focus away from the costs of facilities and, instead, to concentrate on their value: the return of investment as the primary means for choosing among alternative facilities strategies. Stresses the importance of clearly defining and communicating the value of investing in institutional facilities in terms of measurable outcomes, and details examples of values (i.e., a facility's value in terms of the institutional mission). Details building credibility in the ways buildings are planned, designed, and managed; integrating the decision-making process in facilities investment; and creating a stewardship environment.
