Date: 1991

Presentation at APPA's78th Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Describes the design-build method used by the University of Maryland, which employs only one contractor, who hires the designer.  In this method the owner holds a single entity responsible for both design and construction. Includes figures delineating the process and relationships.  Discusses when the design-build contract procured with a two-part competitive sealed proposal is more appropriate than the conventional method.  Details the advantages that have accrued from this approach.  Covers request for proposal process, project team, project development, RFP schedule, contractor selection and design management, design phase, and construction phase.
