Discusses how the University of Virginia is designing and implementing grounds improvement projects with safety, as well as traditional values of aesthetics, in mind after experiencing a growing occurrence of assaults.  Describes isolation, surveillance, circulation, and lighting as factors in campus safety and discusses safety criteria in relation to set design standards.  Covers the importance of landscape design and maintenance in adding to the actual and perceived levels of grounds safety.
