Presentation at APPA's 84th Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Recognizing that the number of accidents and loss time injuries were on the increase, the University of Maryland Department of Physical Plant started a formal safety program in 1990. Discusses reasons for starting a program, getting top management agreement, creating and selling the program, employee involvement, program aspects, program achievements, and safety slogans. In the past 6 years the program has reduced accidents by 50 percent, accident-related costs by 50 percent, and back injuries by more than 90 percent. Includes tables.
