Faced with mutiple leadership changes, the Duke University physical plant department recognized a need to better motivate employees.  Concluded that the key was to help supervisors better motivate the work force and developed a plan of action.  Discusses determining the causes of low productivity, reviewing literature on motivation, importance of the supervisor's relationship to employees, customer service, and Duke's supervisor training program, which included modules on communications, problem solving, meeting management, and diplomacy.
