A proven philosophy for dealing with capital improvement projects and new construction, especially for self-funded private colleges, is that it is better to obtain one-time funding to construct energy-efficient buildings with quality equipment. Describes 3 projects at Colorado College in which the institution reached beyond minimum requirements and accepted an increase in first costs in return for long-term benefits of energy savings. The projects were enclosure of the college ice rink, installing low-E windows in a dormitory, and air-to-air heat exchangers for a new science building.
