Provides background on hazardous waste management at the Smithsonian Institution, beginning in 1984 with efforts concentrated on the Office of Plant Services, which supplies electrical power and building maintenance to the museums.  Describes current efforts, including the establishment of the Office of Environmental Management and Safety Programs in 1987, which coordinated hazardous waste coordinators at each of the museums.
