Author: White, Michael
Published In: Strategic Assessment Model, The, second edition
Date: 2001

Chronicles the evolution of benchmarking, performance measurement, and continuous improvement initiatives at the University of Miami Facilities Administration Department. In 1990, the department had strong motivations to take aggresive action when the university began a program to reduce costs and improve services and was looking at contracted services.  Began measuring everything to develop performance measures for all facets of operations and make date-driven decisions.  Concerned with worker productivity, invited industrial engineering department to conduct efficiency analyses of operations.  Used data to reorganize department structure.  Other assessments resulted in revamping summer housing turnover process and completing more preventive maintenance work orders.  Figures include pie charts and bar graphs from physical plant labor study and computerized maintenance management system.
