"The Changing College Classroom"
Author: Paulien, Daniel K.

Reviews the attention given to studying and measuring classroom space over the last thirty years, even though classrooms usually make up less than 10 percent of the educational and general space available at research universities and 25 percent at community colleges.  Discusses instructional changes that have affected the standard rectangular set-ups with chairs and often result in more space per student than the traditional design.  While many institutions are still measured on the 15 square feet per student station, the average is more likely 20 square feet as more active learning and computer based rooms are added to the classroom mix.
