Describes an innovative internship program sponsored by the Texas Governor's Energy Office which provided a mechanical engineering Ph.D. candidate who conducted an assessment of the utilities operations at the University of Texas, Houston (including the energy conservation plan, physical installation, and billing and operational procedures). The programmatic recommendations emerging from the process were then incorporated into the operations department, resulting in substantial resource and financial savings. Offers their experience as a reason for undergoing evaluation and assessment of operations despite concerns about the findings.
