Published In: Foundation to Uphold: A Study of Facilities Conditions at U.S. Colleges and Universities, A
Date: 1996

Concerned about campus physical environments, a collaboration of APPA, NACUBO, and Sallie Mae conducted a 1995 survey of higher education facilities conditions in the U.S.  Summarizes findings, including the estimated $26 billion in total costs to eliminate accumulated deferred maintenance, of which $5.7 billion are urgent needs, represent a threat to the capability of higher education facilities to support the missions of their colleges and universities. Further, a sustained institutional commitment to action is necessary; the higher education community has roles and responsibilities in addressing the problems; and facilities must prepare for the 21st century, cognizant of the potential impact of information technology on higher education capital asset management.
