"COVID-19 Fire and Life Safety Code Impacts"
Author: Alan Sactor
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: July/August 2021

Although many changes have occurred with every day life in higher education (occupancy, sanitizing, directional signage,) the author does not believe that there will be significant changes to the fundamental fire and life safety codes specifically to accommodate COVID-19 or other future pandemics.  Fire and life safety codes should be able to accommodate short-term solutions as long as fire officials have the authority to assess the risk and employ alternate means of compliance where warranted. This model is effective for colleges and universities when the fire official works jointly with the facility managers.
