Author: Milster, P. Ferman, and Jeri Ripley King
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: September/October 2005

Using biomass fuel in its circulating fluidized bed boiler, the University of Iowa Power Plant pioneered a new green energy source that saves hundreds of thousands of dollars in fuel costs annually, and utilizes a renewable waste product. The new green energy source is Resifil, a processed oak hull product produced by the local Quaker Oats Company, which required special materials handling solutions, boiler control systems modifications, and new procedures to make this fuel work as a viable long-term energy source. Covers this award-winning project's institutional benefits, innovation and creativity, portability and sustainability, management commitment and employee involvement, and documentation.
