Discusses the campus concern over IT security breaches from the theft of personal identities and intellectual property to crashes of key systems. Reports on the work of the security task force established in 2000 by EDUCAUSE and Internet2 to raise awareness of IT security issues in higher education and develop practical steps campuses can take to protect their IT assets and detect and respond to incidences which do occur. Qayoumi, vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer at California State University, Northridge; and Rob Clark, director of internal auditing, Georgia Institute of Technology.  Lists 5 steps to IT security recommended by the task force.
