Date: May/June 2005
Summarizes research conducted through APPA's Center for Facilities Research. Posits that while change is essential to any improvement effort, higher education institutions are highly resistant to internal change, creating difficulties for the necessary improvements needed for facilities management excellence. Describes the components of organizational culture that may encourage or discourage change: leadership style, assumptions about people, relationships, and sustaining forces. Provides a case study of how Bryn Mawr College has been shifting its culture from the traditional model to a more stewardship approach. Provides a list of recommended readings.
