"News Flash on Flash Protection"
Author: Anthony, Michael A., PE

Code Talkers column.  Discusses the flash protection requirement published in the National Electric Code Handbook published by the National Fire Protection Association.  The key idea is that people must be protected from the hazards of electricity that arise even when they do not touch a live part, such as when a space heater is plugged in when the control dial is set to "on."  Includes information on flash protection boundary calculations and flash and shock hazard warning signs.  By abstaining on a vote to accept the proposal to require these calculations, the APPA code advocacy representative effectively gave the industry three years to grasp the implications of, and prepare for, a more rigorous flash protection requirement.  Offers recommendations for dealing with flash hazards. Sidebar reprints the pertinent section from the NEC 2005 Handbook.
