"Integrating Sustainability in the Learning Community"
Author: Cortese, Anthony D., Sc.D.
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: January/February 2005

Emphasizing that the current generation is the first capable of determining the habitability of the planet for humans and other species, Cortese reviews the impact of creating, operating, and replenishing the infrastructure.  Notes that higher education has shown an interest in sustainable design as evidenced by the number of buildings that have met LEED standards and interest by groups such as APPA and the Society for College and University Planning. Despite these efforts, the students themselves are not being educated in the knowledge, skills, and values of sustainability.  Discusses the current lack of sustainability education and calls for higher education to take on this challenge, outlining what this would mean in terms of the content and context of learning. Reviews the work of Second Nature, a nonprofit organization of which he is president, to make sustainability the foundation for the education of all design and planning professionals by the year 2015. Discusses the means and benefits of this approach.
