"Decoding the Confusing World of Code Regulations"
Author: Baker, Brooks H. III
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: January/February 2005

Initial Code Talkers column.  Comparing some facilities professionals' unfamiliarity with compliance codes to the Japan's bafflement with Navajo code talkers in World War II, Brooks introduces the new column in Facilities Manager that will increase APPA members' "awareness of applicable codes for educational facilities and provide insight into their meaning and specific applications" at individual institutions.  Because of the contradictory and potentially negative consequences of some codes, APPA is seeking input into codes proposed by the National Fire Protection Association; Environmental Protection Agency; American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers; and the International Building Code. Cites example of National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72) as a code affecting APPA members.
