"2004 Effective & Innovative Practices Award Winners Show Imagination and Practical Solutions / Pennsylvania State University: Trash to Treasure Program"

At the end of spring semester, students at Pennsylvania State University donated items they no longer wanted to the Trash to Treasure program; 400 volunteers sorted through the items which were donated to local food banks or sold to benefit the Centre County United Way member organizations at a sale at the football stadium which attracted 9,000 shoppers and made a profit of $37,623. Michele Guisewite, auxiliary and business services marketing officer, and Paul Ruskin, communications coordinator for the office of physical plant, describe how this Penn State effort satisfied the criteria of APPA's Effective & Innovative Practices Award, reporting on institutional benefits; characteristics and qualities that made the program different and innovative; how this program can be used by others; management commitment and employee involvement; and results, analysis, customer feedback, and resulting benchmarks.
