Adapted from Bernstein's presentation at APPA's 2004 Educational Facilities Leadership Forum.  Discusses the open system, mult-vendor, fully integrated, and fair bid contracts of the present, which have replaced stand-alone, sole-sourced, locked-in systems designs of the past.  Describes the contract process. beginning with a master plan and developing the best practices and objectives for both long- and short-term integration, and the importance of cross discipline system integration, sustainable design, and using the existing campus Ethernet backbone in communication and integration to reduce maintenance staff training. Includes diagrams of the contract process.
