"Code Advocacy for the Educational Facilities Profession"
Author: Jaeger, Thomas W., P.E.
Published In: Facilities Manager
Date: January/February 2004

The author defines code advocacy as "an organized effort to influence the outcomes by gaining access and voice in the decision making of relevant codes and standards development organizations whose codes and standards are used to regulate your industry."  Reviews the use of code advocacy in other industries and development of codes and standards through the concensus process. While there is currently no higher education occupancy category, there are codes which relate specifically at higher education buildings; reports on such codes in the National Fire Protection Association's systems. Summarizes importance of code advocacy for APPA members.  Includes sidebar by Douglas Erickson on the code advocacy experiences of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering of the Amreican Hospital Association.
