Reports on the U.S. power grid in light of recent power outages in North America. Provides a technical overview of the power grid and its current conditions and summarizes new technologies necessary to improve the U.S. power network, including supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA); wide area measurement systems (WAMS); transmission line monitors; flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS); high temperature superconductors (HTS); and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) devices. Encourages facilities officers to communicate their concerns about power congestion and overload to decision makers.
