"Commissioning Provides Value to Campus Facilities  "

Developed over the last 30 years, the process of commissioning a building has moved from commercial facilities into the academic realm.  As defined at the 1993 National Conference on Building Commissioning, "commissioning is a systematic process of assuring that a building performs in accordance with the design intent and the owner's operational needs."  Commissioning's overall goal is to construct a facility that operates as intended, with the provision of a safe and healthy environment as the primary objective. Authors review commissioning as it relates to campus construction; the goals of building commissioning; the benefits of commissioning for the owner, design professional, and contractor; integrating commissioning into the design/construction process; and evaluating which building systems should be commissioned.
