When the 23-campus California State University system initiated a quality initiative for each function department, facilities chose the Strategic Assessment Model (SAM). Approximately half of the campuses participated in the voluntary exercise. Participants decided to make educated guesses about data not currently collected and to make collecting data a future goal. They debated the specifics of some criteria. Group has not yet analyzed data but will examine and compare their instituitions to make improvements. Plans to complete survey at least biennially and believes the time it entailed--five days over two months--will be shortened now that campuses have agreed on criteria.
