Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Campus Planning

Colby College, one of the nation’s preeminent liberal arts colleges, seeks a highly motivated leader with exceptional strategic, operational, and interpersonal skills and broad expertise to join the leadership team as Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Campus Planning. This is a unique opportunity to develop and execute a best-in-class facilities program to support Colby’s students, faculty, and staff.

The Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Campus Planning provides leadership and supervision of Colby’s facilities organization and is responsible for all facilities planning, operations, maintenance, renovation, and construction at Colby. Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and working with the president and other senior administrative staff, they are responsible for planning, constructing, operating, and maintaining facilities in support of the College’s educational and co-curricular programs. The Assistant Vice President will play an important role in developing a long-term vision for campus development, architectural and landscape design standards, sustainable design and operations, and innovative approaches to ensure campus facilities support the educational mission and campus community. They will participate in campus planning groups, design teams, and project management teams from conception to execution of major projects.

The traits and experience of the ideal candidate include: demonstrated experience in capital planning and operations management; experience overseeing facilities management, capital programs, facilities planning, space management, and environmental health and safety programs and services for large high-volume/high-use education and research institutions; a significant record of administrative leadership and achievement; knowledge and experience of the operation of a large service-oriented organization comprised of a diverse employee population and a collegial, consultative, and forthright style of leadership.  A Bachelor’s degree required; master’s preferred; licensure as a Registered Architect or Professional Engineer in the state of Maine and accreditation as LEED Professional or LEED Green Associate or ability to obtain accreditation within six months is preferred.

Facilities Development Management, Office of the University Architect (OUA), seeks an Architect to act on behalf of the Office of the University Architect as the owners Design Manager during all phases of construction projects.

 

Salary Range

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Architecture or related field AND three (3) years of architectural experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona OR, NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certification and become a registered Architect in the State of Arizona within six (6) months after date of hire. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

 

Desired Qualifications

Eight (8) years of architectural design experience in interior tenant improvements, renovations and additions (e.g. laboratory, office/classroom). 

Experience in: 

  • Researched based projects
  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency with Revit, Sketch Up and 3D rendering software
  • Design, hand sketching 
  • Construction cost estimating
  • Managing multiple projects and coordinating the work of a design team to ensure compliance with the program statement
  • Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revue and PMIS (Project Management Information Software) programs
  • Architecture and architectural principles, practices and techniques
  • LEED AP or Green Associate Certification 
  • Working with allied professionals including architects, planners, interior designers, landscape architects, engineers and other specialty consultants

Demonstrated knowledge:

  • International building codes and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code; federal and state facility and code requirements; accessibility standards
  • Building materials and construction methods; and structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering system integration related to building costs
  • Effective communication skills
  • Building materials and construction methods
  • Federal and state facility building and accessibility code requirements
  • Structural, mechanical and electrical engineering systems relating to building functions and costs
  • LEED and current sustainability concepts
  • Various project delivery methods including Job Order Contract (JOC), Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) and Design Build (DB)

Ability to: 

  • Organize and coordinate the work of others
  • Lead by example in communicating, participating and encouraging support of the institution's sustainability programs
  • Communicate orally in the English language with customers, colleagues, and the public using a telephone and in-group and face-to-face, one-to-one settings
  • Think critically and present the right depth of relevant data and information to an audience

The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • Providing leadership to the division of Capital Planning, Capital Projects, and Facilities Maintenance in the areas of administration, management, supervision, budget preparation, evaluation, training, and professional development; 
  • Responsible for leading College construction project management and maintaining all related communications and relationships with consultant engineers and architects, construction managers, contractors, college committees, and staff members;
  • Responsible for the annual Capital Improvement Project Report, Project Priority List, and the Five-Year Educational Plant Survey;
  • Serves as Coordinator of capital improvement projects involving new construction, remodeling, renovation, and land acquisition;
  • Provide guidance and training to College facilities staff for implementing civil engineering operations and maintenance programs;
  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of exterior preventative maintenance programs for all IRSC facilities;
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program for all current and future College campuses;
  • Compile, develop, and maintain a geographic information database and maps detailing facilities, hardscape, storm-water and utility infrastructure for all College campuses;
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of relevant experience with at least 5+ years of leadership experience;
  • Licensed Building Code Administrator in the State of Florida desired.
