Assistant Director of Health and Safety

The Assistant Director of Health and Safety will be responsible for managing and providing the overall leadership for safety, health and regulatory compliance for the Housing Department. The position will be the liaison between the University Health and Safety Department, Facilities Management Department and Housing. This position will review current processes for compliance, recommend future changes, implement adopted changes, monitor and report on overall effectiveness of programs. This position will be the key leadership position to ensure a safe healthy work environment and living environment for our occupants. This position will help with internal projects that are completed by our staff, contractors, facilities management or a combination of work forces.

Job duties include: Providing the leadership for investigating indoor air quality (IAQ) issues, testing, remedial program, and reporting; developing and implementing a written plan for conducting baseline indoor air quality assessments for all buildings when concerns or complaints arise; Utilizing outside resources, internal staff and testing equipment investigate problems, determine sources, and ensure proper action is taken to eliminate problems; Interpreting  data, preparing technical reports, and issuing recommendations for mitigation;  Maintaining records of all assessments and outcomes. Creating new or modifying existing processes and standard operating procedures (SOP) to develop and implement health emergency response plans to guide the department in responding to disease or emergency health issues found in residential populations, including the logistics and assets required.  Creating occupational and environmental risk assessments for Housing and developing written programs, conducting compliance inspections, and assisting with corrective action plans and training. 

Master’s degree and 3 years related program experience, or bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience is required. Incumbent must also possess a valid driver’s license. Knowledge of applicable OSHA and EPA rules, regulations and laws; working knowledge of test equipment used to investigate indoor air quality problems; knowledge of applicable safety principles, methods, standards and techniques used to correct unsafe working conditions; working knowledge of database, spreadsheet, word processing and communications software strongly preferred.

HVAC Technician I

Overview

Assists in maintaining HVAC equipment, refrigeration equipment, specialty HVAC vaults, ice machines and kitchen equipment.



Responsibilities

  • Assists with repairs, inspections, overhauls, and scheduled maintenance of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, refrigeration systems, and food service equipment
  • Assists senior HVAC technicians in maintaining tight climate conditions in collection areas to ensure that environmental systems are functioning properly

PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities Services and Operations, the Logistical Services Manager provides direct supervision and management of the Shipping and Receiving, Moving Services, Material Control Center, Mail and Delivery Services operations. This position is responsible for all aspects of planning and execution of logistical support and setup for numerous University events, including commencements, luncheons, receptions, and other events that promote ongoing relationships with students, alumni, faculty, staff, and donors. The Incumbent also ensures that assigned employees accurately collects, sorts, and distributes campus mail and packaged materials in accordance with U.S. Postal Service regulations and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Shipping and Receiving, Materials Control Center, and Moving Services:

1. Manages the daily operations of Shipping and Receiving and Moving Services. Effectively communicates and coordinates activities in order to eliminate redundant functions and to ensure all requirements are met.

2. Plans specific work assignments, and ensures that all aspects of the assignments are supported, including work schedules, equipment, supplies and materials to operate in the most efficient and effective manner.

3. Oversees implementation of the CSUMB Injury and Illness Prevention Plan within the Facilities Department, and creates a climate that considers every job from a safety perspective first.

4. Analyzes and reports on operational effectiveness to support continuous improvement.

5. Supervises assigned personnel in all areas, and ensure they are performing their duties as outlined in the Job Description.

6. Assists in preparing and managing the annual Shipping and Receiving budget.

7. Review all work orders in the Computerized Maintenance Management System.


Mail and Delivery Services:

1. Manages the daily operations of Mail and Delivery services. Effectively communicates and coordinates activities in order to eliminate redundant functions and to ensure all requirements are met.

2. Plans specific work assignments, and ensuring that all aspects of the assignments are supported, including work schedules, equipment, supplies and materials to operate in the most efficient and effective manner.

3. Assists in preparing and managing the budget for mail and delivery services.

4. Supervises personnel in all areas, and ensure they are performing their duties as outlined in the Job Description.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Independently administers and manages the activities of personnel, Shipping and Receiving, Material Control Center, and Campus Mail Center. Supervises personnel, conducts performance evaluations, inspects completed work, and makes commendations and recommendations for counseling or reprimand. Performs various shipping and receiving, archive, material handling, mail services and warehouse functions as needed. Works with various constituencies to improve services and resolve problems; maintains continuing contact with faculty, staff, students, and campus administrators to identify needs and expectations, coordinates services and support, and determines the level of customer satisfaction with the services provided. Works with and through other people to accomplish the objectives of the organization and its members and represents the department to all levels of the campus. Promotes a customer-oriented environment and promotes and maintains a safe working environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and/or the equivalent training and administrative work experience involving the study, analysis, evaluation, development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices or programs with a minimum of approximately five years related experience in management or supervision of a large warehouse, shipping and receiving department, mail center, or similar environment, preferably in a college or university setting.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of Shipping and Receiving, Mail Services, Material Management and archive functions. Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations and procedures. Knowledge and experience working in a collective bargaining environment including conflict resolution and grievance administration. Experience in a university or other educational setting preferred but not required. Experience using barcoding and scanning equipment.

Senior Manager of Trades

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Manages the trade shops that perform facilities operations and maintenance of the campus including the electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other building trades.
  • Ensures code compliance and safety; supports departmental strategic goals.
  • Effectively integrates and coordinates departmental activities to support long and short-term goals and university functions.
  • Supports the development of the campus five-year deferred maintenance program and ensures compliance with CSU System, local, state and federal mandates related to the physical plant operations of the campus.
  • Delegates, directs, and coordinates the day-to-day operations through supervisors and/or leads in each shop; provides advice to Facilities Services administrators and staff and sets standards, procedures, and best practices to support the University within the resources allocated.
  • Provides consistent management across each trade, in compliance with CSU standards and collective bargaining unit agreements.
  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of buildings, mechanical systems, infrastructure, special repairs, renovation, and in-house deferred maintenance.
  • Administers manufacturer recommended preventative maintenance program; coordinates data collection and maintains records of permits for pressure vessels, fuel use, elevator permits, fume hoods, fire suppression and detection systems, and manages violations.
  • Oversees the preparation of estimates, proposals, and detailed schedules for maintenance and repair projects, ensures completion of all work is within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Monitors assorted vendor contracts, including but not limited to, fire life safety, hazardous waste and abatement, and elevator services and inspection.
  • Ensures various trades areas are adequately staffed with qualified skilled crafts personnel.
  • Schedules performance evaluations in conformance with Collective Bargaining Agreement requirements, provides training and development, and performs corrective action when appropriate.
  • Coordinates with campus architect, inspector, State Fire Marshal, Environmental Health & Safety and others within the campus community to ensure proper coordination and communication.
  • Supports audit responses for various agencies.
  • Provides facility representation for regulatory inspection functions, tenant improvement issues, and in-house project management.
  • Manages a comprehensive, well planned and coordinated routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance program.
  • Supports goals, strategic initiatives, and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) to improve departmental performance in collaboration with subordinates.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years of experience in Facilities Operations / Physical Plant or similar field is required and a background in higher education facilities management and planning is desirable. Experience, ability, and skills to plan and supervise the work of others; make sound decisions and recommendations; use good judgement in respect to staffing, planning, budgeting, organizing, and carrying out the fiduciary responsibilities of the position. Proficiency in the use of computers, software programs, including demonstrated proficiency with computerized inventory systems, and Microsoft Office Suite. Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships campus wide and foster effective customer service.

Project Utility Engineer
Iowa State University

Facilities Planning and Management at Iowa State University is seeking to hire a Project Utility Engineer. The position responsibilities include providing engineering services for utility mechanical distribution facilities consisting of domestic water, chilled water, steam, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and natural gas systems.   Duties will include analyzing and troubleshooting utility systems and equipment; planning and managing utility projects; and coordinating contractors and design consultants.  In addition, this position will be responsible for documenting distribution systems and design standards and providing support of mechanical distribution personnel.   

 

The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills; strong organizational and analytical skills; and the ability to organize and coordinate work within and between projects. They must have the ability to understand complex utility systems and equipment.

 

This position will be filled at the Engineer III or IV level. The Engineer III position has minimum required qualifications of Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience and is a PS810 pay level. The Engineer IV position has minimum required qualifications of Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience and is a PS811 pay level. A State of Iowa Professional Engineering license is preferred for the Engineer IV position.

 

While this position is based on the Ames campus, it requires some off-campus travel to visit all areas with utility piping. Candidate must be able to be approved to drive an ISU owned vehicle.

JOB SUMMARY:
