University of Kentucky

Associate Vice President, Capital Planning, Design, and Construction

The University of Kentucky (UK) is continuing to build, transform and grow its campus into a thriving, residential research campus -- one poised to serve those students, scholars and staff today; one that is ready to serve the needs of the state and world tomorrow. To do this -- to create the best possible environment for the UK community's success -- the institution has invested, and largely self-financed, over $2.5 billion in a campus transformation, with new residence halls and classrooms, research facilities, dining facilities and athletic venues. UK is one of only eight institutions in the country with the full complement of liberal arts, engineering, professional, agricultural and medical colleges and disciplines on one contiguous campus.

The Associate Vice President, Capital Planning, Design, and Construction is an essential position to our campus growth and transformation, and will provide administrative and leadership direction to all functional areas in support of capital planning, design, and construction project management. Direct management and collaboration with department staff will be crucial to provide all required project management services to engage stakeholders, procure services, design to codes, and complete construction within established financial, functional, operational, and scheduling goals. Significant experience with development of capital budgets, workflows, policies, procedures, organized record keeping, assessment, benchmarking and systems for the efficient allocation of resources will be key for success in the role. The AVP communicates and collaborates with various internal (e.g. University Colleges, UK HealthCare Facilities Planning and Management) and external (e.g. privately owned companies, contractors)stakeholders to define and prioritize needs in accordance with the planning, designing, and implementation of the University’s strategic initiatives for both on-campus and off-campus projects. In addition, the AVP participates in the Periodic Campus Master Plan and precinct plan updates and is responsible, along with the Vice President for Facilities Management and Chief Facilities Officer, in planning and producing the biennium and 6-year capital request for University Administration.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Plays an active and leading role in strategic facilities planning, space management, design standards, and ensuring compliance with required procurement and approval processes
  • Coordinates all aspects of the design and construction process as well as selection process for design teams and contractors
  • Develops, administers, and manages annual multi-million dollar University-wide capital construction program
  • Continuously stays up-to-date with industrial systems, design details, advance construction standards, and industry trends
  • Establishes Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) to be measured to ensure customer requirements are met or exceeded in accordance with established procedures and processes and holds team members accountable
  • Pro-actively and regularly initiates, establishes, and maintains effective client relationships with faculty, staff, students, and others to advance the University of Kentucky’s strategic initiatives, mission and goals
