In any multistory academic, athletic, or residential building, the vertical transportation systems typically are composed of elevators and escalators. Because these units represent a significant expense, proper design, installation, and maintenance of these systems is essential to building operations and public safety. As a result, effective asset management becomes an important responsibility for all facilities managers. To assist in this responsibility, this section will discuss the different types of elevators; basic elevator design parameters; elevator, escalator, and building code requirements; maintenance and periodic safety inspection requirements; remote monitoring capabilities; and modernization and upgrading of existing systems.
